Presents : Maria Luisa Sylos Labini
Curated by Erminia Scarcella
Maria Luisa Sylos Labini made a presentation on her region of origin, Carnia.
Carnia is a corner of territory in the north-west of Friuli, bordering Austria to the north and Cadore to the west, making it a region unto itself. It is little known because it is outside the most important communication routes with the rest of Europe. In her presentation Maria Luisa talked about the millenary history of this region, its geography, its language, Friulian, its valleys and villages each with their own traditions and particularities, the cuisine and traditional dishes of the various valleys. She dwelt longer on Tolmezzo, the capital of Carnia and her hometown. In Tolmezzo, in particular, there is the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, an ethnographic museum of European importance as it contains a vast collection of traditional and ethnographic material. The presentation ended with a captivating and moving mountain song.
